Assault Rifles are essentially rifles with shortened barrels and given select and/or burst-fire features. They are currently the most common weapon issued to armed forces worldwide, and quickly replaced the traditional bolt-action and semi-automatic rifles common beforehand (those of which became second-line or support weapons).
